Great Northern Classics Networking Event
There is something truly special about the Derby business community. Today’s Networking event was a perfect example of why local networking is so vital—not just for business growth, but for the genuine connections and stories that emerge when we all get in one room.
The backdrop couldn't have been better. Hosted at Great Northern Classics, the venue’s unique heritage atmosphere provided the perfect energy for a morning of insights and introductions.
Celebrating Excellence: The King’s Award for Enterprise
The highlight of the session was a deep dive into the King’s Awards for Enterprise. Rachel Hayward from Ask the Chameleon Ltd delivered an exceptional presentation on the tangible benefits of applying for such a prestigious honour.
It was a privilege to hear from Marvin Cooke OBE DL and Francoise Derksen, who demystified the awards process, and Steve Mountney from HSG UK. As a previous winner, Steve spoke brilliantly about how their commitment to quality led them to the awards—and even to installations at Buckingham Palace! In his words, it brings a whole new meaning to the "Royal wee."
A Community of Familiar Faces
Beyond the formal presentations, the event was a whirlwind of catch-ups and new introductions:
New Generations: It was lovely to meet the youngest-ever Bondholder member, baby Cooper, alongside his mum Hannah Edwards and Sarah Armitage MBE from the Derby Kids’ Camp team.
The Future of the Venue: Chatting with Michael Copestake about the growth of Great Northern Classics was a treat—though we spent just as much time reminiscing about his stint as a dancer for the Derbyshire Unstrictly Dancing Fundraiser. It seems his dancing shoes are officially retired!
Celebrating Colleagues: A big welcome to my colleague from Derby College, Amy Blythe, who attended her very first Bondholder event.
Charitable Passion: Catherine Cleary MBE spoke with such infectious passion about First Steps ED, the charity she founded, reminding us all of the incredible social impact work happening in our region.
Family Legacies: Speaking with Olivia, Louisa, and Harrison Priestley from DSP (Interiors) Ltd was incredibly moving. Their story of growing a family business through difficult circumstances is a testament to true Derbyshire resilience.
Bittersweet Goodbyes and Overdue Coffees
Networking is often about the passage of time. I had a wonderful chat with Tracy Harrison from Safe and Sound Group, though it’s still hard to believe she will be stepping down as CEO later this year.
On a lighter note, the "coffee list" is growing! After spotting Sarah Armitage and Jamie Quince-Starkey, I’ve realised I have a few caffeine-fuelled meetings that are slightly overdue since last December and January. I promise we’ll get those in the diary soon!
A Unique Space for Growth
As someone who runs Derbyshire Business Networking and The Midlands Coaching Club (with Liz Horsey) at this venue, I am already a huge fan of the space. However, experiencing it today as a guest reminded me why it’s such a standout location—the service is consistently excellent and the surroundings are truly one-of-a-kind.
Finally, a massive thank you to Lindsey Hatfield, Sarah McAllister, and the entire Marketing Derby team. Your support for the Bondholders makes these events the success they are.
Until the next one!
